APPLES

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a true statement! Studies have shown that people who eat at least 2 apples a week show a significant less chance of developing certain cancers as well as a decreased risk of heart disease. Apples are delicious and there are many varieties, ranging in color and taste, so pick your favorites and indulge! Your body will thank you.

Fit Facts: Organic apples have many nutritious qualities, as long as you leave the skin on! The majority of the fit benefits of apples, including ellagic Acid which has anticancer properties, pectin which aids in digestion and eliminates toxins, fiber, vitamin C, Potassium and other flavonoids, are all found in the skin. When the skin is removed or the juice is bottled, the health benefits go down to almost zero. So, leave the skin on and enjoy not only just a decreased heart disease risk and the anti-cancer properties, but eating organic apples has been found to decrease risk for type 2 diabetes and asthma and are antiviral as well. So, eat up and watch those doctor visits diminish.

When to buy: Late Summer – early Winter. Apples are usually available year round and are refrigerated or flown in from around the world when out of season. Select organic apples that are firm and crisp and full of color, avoiding those with bruises or cuts.

The Organic Choice: It is very important for your health to eat organic apples. Non-organic apples are treated with extremely harmful chemicals and are even often covered in wax to preserve them longer and make them “look” fresh.
